On Behalf of Empire Immigration Law, PLLC | May 5, 2023 | Green Card
It can be relieving to complete the immigration process and hold your green card. As a green card holder (permanent resident), you will have new rights, and one of them is working in the U.S. at any legal work of your qualification and choosing. However, some jobs may not accept you.
Here is what you need to know:
For security reasons
Some employers only hire U.S. citizens for certain tasks for security reasons. They may not go into detail, but they may have this information on their online post or can inform you when you visit the company. Such a company may offer you another position and leave the one in question for a U.S. citizen.
Is it discriminatory?
It can be discriminatory for an employer to deny you employment based on your national origin. However, this may not always be the case, especially when one has legal justification to limit a job to U.S. citizens. For instance, although possible, it can be challenging for a green card holder to access U.S. classified information.
Can you get a reliable job?
A significant percentage of jobs accept both citizens and green card holders. Thus, you don’t need to worry about missing out on a reliable job. The employment you get can give competitive pay, health insurance, a retirement plan, adequate paid time off and other benefits.
However, if the job you are eyeing requires security clearance, you may need to obtain adequate information about your options.
Green card holders have the right to work in the U.S. You can create a convenient living in the country and even help your loved ones move. It may be best to get legal help to make the right moves.
