What is the goal of a green card marriage interview?

You can get a green card through marriage, and this often happens when someone from another country marries a U.S. citizen. For instance, you may have been a college student when you came to the United States on a student visa. You then met someone, fell in love, and decided to get married. Now you would like to adjust your status.

To do this, one step in the process is simply to go through an interview with the authorities. They will want to talk to both you and your new spouse. What is the goal of the interview?

What the questions are trying to achieve

The questions in a green card interview are often things that you can’t study or prepare for. They may also be questions that seem to just relate to your daily life. For instance, the interviewer may ask you where you went on your first date, who tends to cook dinner more often, which side of the bed you sleep on, or what happened when you (or your spouse) proposed.

The questions themselves aren’t all that important, in the sense that you’re not trying to provide the correct answers and pass this test. There are no correct answers. The goal of the test is simply to see if your marriage is fraudulent or not. If you and your spouse give vastly different answers to questions that a married couple should easily know, then the authorities may be concerned that you’re not really in a relationship, but that you’re involved in a fraudulent marriage just to get the green card.

As you move through the immigration process, be sure you carefully consider exactly what steps you need to take.
