Why seek citizenship when you have a green card?

Getting a green card can be such an exhausting process that you might not ever want to deal with the immigration authorities again. Hence, like many people, you may decide there is no reason to pursue citizenship.

Yet gaining citizenship will give you advantages above and beyond those a green card offers. Here are some of them:

You cannot lose citizenship

Once you gain citizenship, it is yours for life. That’s not always the case with green cards, and every year people can and do lose the right to have one. Retaining green cards requires meeting certain requirements, such as not being out of the country too long and ensuring you file your taxes here. Citizenship will give you the right to stay as long as you want and leave whenever you want for as long as you want, even if that means you file your taxes abroad or never return.

Citizenship gives you more right to bring others into the country

Once you gain citizenship, you have more chance of bringing family members to join you. So, even if you are not bothered about moving beyond a green card, personally, your family may appreciate it.

You can get a United States passport

Perhaps your home country’s passport was not that welcome in many countries. A U.S. passport may make traveling a lot easier and perhaps cheaper if it removes the need for visa fees in certain destinations.

If gaining U.S. citizenship sounds of interest, consider legal help to find out more.
